Every business organizations have a structure in process and decision making. Understanding the organization chart and its process is central to the study of Management Information Systems. The aim of Management Information Systems is to optimize processes and information flow using technologies in which businesses can respond more quickly and better to the changing environment surrounding them.

In-depth analysis and optimization of data/information flow aren’t viable for every business, but it certainly does make sense for many large organizations.

In our MGIS 330 (Systems Analysis and Design) class, we have been assigned to find a potential solution for a company - PCC Wyman Gordon - for our class project. According to PCC Wyman Gordan’s website, they describe themselves as a  “premier forging company for the global aerospace and energy markets. Providing a specialized service, Wyman-Gordon manufactures forged components from high-grade titanium and nickel-based alloys. Such components are used for jet engines, including fan disks, compressor disks, turbine disks, and shafts”.

Foraging Process at PCC Wyman Gordon

PCC Wyman Gordon system analysis and design case

Throughout this project, we were allowed to analyze PCC Wyman Gordon's issues in keeping track of the ring forging process and reporting to management and clients. In conclusion, we have identified a potential solution that we feel that PCC Wyman Gordon can utilize.

Our work:

System Overview

We have collected and recorded information via a remote interview with a current PCC Wyman Gordon employee regarding PCC Wyman Gordon’s existing reporting system for the foraging process.

Use Case Diagram

Based on the information we collected through the interview, our effort was to understand the full scope of the foraging process and the people involved. Use Case Diagram outlines what information a stakeholder/user needs to participate within the system efficiently.

Data Collection Methods

We outlined the information we need to gather to build up a list of alternative solutions. With more information, one can identify a better solution to address PCC Wyman Gordon needs to solve.

List of Alternative Solutions

All of the solutions we have listed that could address PCC Wyman Gordon’s issues.

Swim Lane Diagram

Swim Lane Diagrams are used to define process steps within the horizontal or vertical “swimlanes”. Swimlanes identifies departments or particular groups within an organization. Sources on the internet point out that its purpose is to find waste and inefficiencies.

Activity Diagram

The purpose of the activity diagram is to map out the overall process and behavior of a system. In the diagram, we have laid out a process that should improve the reporting system’s efficiencies.

Cost-Benefit Analysis

We have used Excel to compare the potential impact of each alternative solution that we have proposed.

Final Deliverable

A comprehensive overview of what we had discovered and worked on throughout the semester towards finding a solution for PCC Wyman Gordon.

TLDR:

PCC Wyman Gordon was having issues keeping track of their specialized products, so we developed a potential solution.
